Historical notes

In 1929 the mathematicians Gian Antonio Maggi, Oscar Chisini and Giulio Vivanti founded the Institute of Mathematics of University of Milan. Chisini himself was chairman of the Institute since earl Thirties to 1959.

In 1952, to honor the memory of the great Master, dead a few years before, Chisini, who was an Enriques' pupil, proposed to give the Institute the name of the Master. During the cerimony he made an illustrative speech about Enriques, published the same year on the Periodico di Matematiche. Enriques' family gave the Institute a portrait of the Master, now exposed in the Sala di Rappresentanza.

In 1982, when the Institute became the Department of Mathematics the name of Federigo Enriques has remained.
