In applications, objects rarely have exactly the same shape within measurement error; hence the randomness of shapes need to be taken into account. Thanks to the development of information technologies, the last decade has seen a considerable growth of interest in the statistical theory of shape and its application to various scientific areas.

The Industry Day Random Geometries in Biomedicine will gather biologists, medical doctors and mathematicians that deal daily with problems where the presence of Random geometries is prominent. Biologists and Medical Doctors will present situations in which the mathematical study of (random) shapes may help the biomedical research. Mathematicians will present details of the main mathematical techniques which are used to address such problems, with reference to specific applications or case studies.
At the Industry Days there will only be invited talks. Anyhow plenty of time will be devoted to open discussion during the workshop, including a round table. Posters about the invited talks will also be available during coffee breaks and lunch to stimulate further discussion.

Some space for contributed posters will be available. If you want to present a poster, please write an email to miriam-workshop@mat.unimi.it
BEFORE DECEMBER 15, 2003 specifing the title and a one page abstract (accepted formats are .doc, .rtf, .txt) of the poster you would like to present.
Confirmation of the acceptance will be given by the organizers by December 31, 2003.

This workshop is funded by MACSI-net, which is an EU-funded Network of Excellence with academic as well as industrial nodes; it is devoted to promote the use of mathematical models, computing and simulation in Industry. To this end it organises activities (meetings, workshops, etc) to increase the awareness in both academia and industry of the potentials of mathematics and simulation, and also to stimulate cooperation.

In particular, this is an event of the Working group Shape and Size in Medicine and Biotechnology, which addresses topics of modelling, inverse problems and scientific computing in areas of Medicine and Biotechnologies in which shapes, often randomly generated, need to be dealt with.

The Workshop, organised by MIRIAM (Milan Research centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), aims to present some recent industrial applications of Coding Theory and Cryptography, including their joint action. Henceforth, leading experts in the field will talk on current research directly applicable to state-of-the-art (or even forthcoming) data transmission and security protocols.

The meeting will take place in the Department of Mathematics, Università di Milano, via Saldini 50, Milano (Italy): informations on accommodations and directions are available. For good maps click here. Help with public transports may be sought on the ATM Website (only in italian) .
