ABOUT THE
SPEAKER: Michael I. Jordan is pioneer in
bridging the disciplines of computational, statistical, cognitive, biological
and social sciences. Widely regarded as one of the most influential researchers
in artificial intelligence and machine learning, Jordan is also recognized
for his fundamental contributions at the interface of computer science and
statistics, in addition to his important contributions to computational
biology, natural language processing and signal processing.
Jordan’s multitalented contributions are
in part the result of his unique educational journey; beginning with a
Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, followed by a Master’s Degree in Statistics
and culminating in a Ph.D. in Cognitive Sciences at the University of
California, San Diego in 1985 under the direction of David Rumelhart. Jordan’s
accomplishments have rightly earned him numerous distinctions and awards,
including his induction into the National Academy of Engineering and the
National Academy of Sciences (both in 2010), amongst other prestigious
academies. Jordan is also a Fellow in numerous professional societies
and the recipient of the John von Neumann Medal
(2020) and the inaugural World Laureates Association Prize in Computer Science
or Mathematics (2022). Jordan held various academic positions at MIT
for ten years being named Professor of Brain and Computational Sciences in
1997. Since 1998 Jordan is Professor of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley and
currently holds the Pehong Chen Distinguished
Chair at Berkeley.
